Yilan Attractions | Beiguan Tidal Park | One-Line Sky | One of the Eight Views of Lanyang

Since we come to Yilan so often, this time we wanted to find some spots we hadn't visited before. We were staying in Jiaoxi, and happened to come across this nearby "Beiguan Tidal Park."

Beiguan Tidal Park, formerly known as Lancheng Park, is located in Toucheng Township, Yilan County, near the border between Yilan and New Taipei. It's a spot that relatively few tourists visit, yet it boasts rich geological scenery. But did you know that it has long been counted as one of the Eight Views of Lanyang, and was also an important defensive pass during the Qing dynasty? According to the "Gazetteer of Kavalan Sub-prefecture": "Lancheng's gateway grips the mountainside, snowy waves surge and roar with the angry tide." Beiguan was regarded as the lock of Lanyang, with perilous surging tides, and during the Qing dynasty a garrisoned pass was established here. The Kavalan Sub-prefecture also designated the Beiguan tides as one of the Eight Views of Lanyang.

🏞 Park Information

"Beiguan Tidal Park" sits beside the coastal highway. Ever since construction of the Hsuehshan Tunnel, visitor numbers have dropped sharply and fewer people detour up to this spot. The park isn't very big — a leisurely stroll takes about half an hour to an hour. Inside you'll find natural rock formations shaped by millions of years of erosion: a cuesta (single-faced mountain), tofu rock, small headlands and more. With rock formations standing everywhere, it can be called a special landscape of the east coast. Three spots here are worth seeing: the "Observation Deck," the "One-Line Sky," and the "Tofu Rock."

The trails along the way are easy to walk, mostly flat ground with just a few stairs, so they're not too difficult for either the elderly or children.

Observation Deck

Because Beiguan sits with mountains on one side and the coast on the other, it served as an important defensive pass for Lanyang during the Qing dynasty. Up on the observation deck you can still see two old cannons pointing straight toward Guishan Island. However, these two cannons weren't originally here — they were unearthed by the Toucheng Township Office and then moved to this spot.

One-Line Sky

This is where the longest photo queue forms — the "One-Line Sky." This distinctive formation created by two huge rocks draws plenty of people who come here just to take photos. Even though we arrived on a Monday afternoon, you still had to line up at the One-Line Sky for a chance to get a shot — people were even still queuing when we passed by on our way back... which shows just how popular it is.

Tofu Rock

Walking down from the One-Line Sky, you'll reach a stretch of trail closer to the shore, where the landscape has been sculpted by nature much like at Yehliu. Many of the rocks at Beiguan Tidal Park have also been eroded by seawater into shapes resembling blocks of tofu.

Still, my favorite view in the whole park is this one along the path: Guishan Island as the backdrop, paired with some rocks and the plants growing on the left, forming a truly beautiful scene.

On a nice day, Beiguan Tidal Park is a great place for a stroll, letting you enjoy the coastline and nature's rock formations. The trail isn't long either — under a kilometer in total — making it perfect for a walk with the whole family.
