Holiday Inn is a subsidiary of the InterContinental Hotels Group and one of the largest hotel chains in the world today — you can find Holiday Inn properties in cities all over the globe. Holiday Inn Express, meanwhile, targets the mid-price range, and there are currently two branches in Taichung City. However, since this trip took place over the Lunar New Year holiday, the rates weren't exactly cheap.

🏢 The Hotel
The interior of Holiday Inn Express Taichung Fengchia is still fairly new, with décor that goes for a relaxed, lively feel. The ground-floor lobby isn't large, and the lounge area doubles as the breakfast area, but the high, bright ceiling gives the lobby a comfortable atmosphere.

The front desk isn't big, but since the hotel probably doesn't have that many rooms, check-in was quick and smooth without much waiting. There's a fridge full of drinks in front of it — from what others have shared online, it seems booking through the official website gets you a free drink on arrival.
🛏 The Room
The rooms follow the same design language, with relaxed, lively colors and styling. The size is about the same as a typical business hotel — not especially spacious, but nowhere near as cramped as many hotels in Japan.
The bed is medium-firm, which is about right, and each bed comes with two pillows — one softer, one firmer — so guests can choose. There were earplugs on the nightstand, and whenever I see earplugs I get a bad feeling: it usually means the soundproofing is poor...
Sure enough, the soundproofing turned out to be among the worst of any hotel I've stayed in... 😅
We were in a corner room, and we could hear the sound of water running for showers in other rooms. Since the room next door was occupied by people traveling with us who hadn't returned yet, it must have been the sound of a bathroom on another floor — the plumbing noise was extremely loud. The soundproofing really is quite bad, which explains why they provide earplugs.

The bathroom is functional enough — apart from the hair dryer being the wall-mounted kind, which isn't very easy to use. But I found the bathroom door design rather bizarre: the bathroom door and the shower door are one and the same. In other words, when you close the shower door to take a shower, the bathroom itself is left with no door. That's not a great design on a cold winter's day, and if you want to close the bathroom door, then the shower has no door and water sprays all over the rest of the bathroom. I really don't understand this design...

Laundry Room
The hotel doesn't have many facilities — just a gym and a laundry room, both on the top floor. Remember to bring your key card, as you need it to badge in!
🍽 Breakfast
Breakfast is served just behind the reception lobby, and there aren't many seats. There is an outdoor dining area, but the temperature was very low during our stay, so nobody wanted to eat outside in the cold wind. With limited seating, late arrivals had to wait a while.

The food actually tastes pretty good. There isn't a huge variety, but it's plenty for a business hotel breakfast. The coffee machine even has takeaway cups so guests can grab a coffee on their way out.

Overall, the soundproofing really is far too poor and the bathroom design is strange and not very friendly in cold weather. Aside from that, everything else was acceptable — the hotel is still fairly new, clean and bright — and if your goal is Fengjia Night Market, the location is excellent.
