In central Perth there is an attraction you can walk to and where you can see kangaroos up close for free - "Heirisson Island", commonly nicknamed Perth city's own Kangaroo Island. It is a small island on the Swan River, crossed in the middle by the Causeway Bridge. Apart from the car park, the island is entirely a kangaroo habitat!

🚃 Getting There
Heirisson Island is a small island on the Swan River. Other than driving straight to the car park, there is no public transport that goes directly there. The closest and most convenient way is to take the Red CAT bus to this stop: Braithwaite St Trinity College, then walk along the Causeway for about 10-15 minutes. Once you cross half of the Causeway Bridge you'll arrive at Heirisson Island!

If you're not sure of the way, just use Google Maps walking navigation - the route it gives is correct. (That's exactly how we got here.)

The gate in this fence isn't locked, but it's designed so kangaroo paws can't open it. So after you go through, remember to close the gate behind you so the kangaroos don't accidentally get out!

Once inside, you can start hunting for kangaroos! There are seven rescued grey kangaroos living freely on the island. Since they're often in contact with people, they're not afraid of humans, and rangers come to feed them regularly.
However, the weather was pretty hot that day, and Heirisson Island isn't exactly tiny - plus there are patches of woodland, so on hot days the kangaroos tend to hide away. At first we walked a whole loop and couldn't find any...

Finally, deep in a shady grove, we found a kangaroo munching on grass!

We spent an hour and a half on Heirisson Island, and in the end this was the only kangaroo we got close to.... There was one more hiding deep in the woods, and we really couldn't find the other five at all 😅.
Heirisson Island is more of a small, low-key attraction; we hardly saw any other visitors that day, since it's still a little way from the city centre. If you're staying in Perth for several days and want somewhere near the city for a stroll, consider wandering over to Heirisson Island and seeing whether you get lucky with a kangaroo encounter!
