Australia Independent Travel | Perth City Bars | Perth's Famous Gin Bar The Flour Factory (now renamed ARARA and Tupí) | Gin and Tonic
| Gin and Tonic from The Flour Factory |
On this trip to Perth, the three-day Pink Lake tour we had originally planned didn't get enough people to run, so we ended up with a lot more time in the city and decided to look for a bar in downtown Perth. While searching online for famous or worthwhile bars in Perth, I came across The Flour Factory, a dedicated gin bar boasting over 100 kinds of gin, and it was within walking distance of our accommodation, so we picked an evening to go and check it out.

🍸 The Venue
| The Flour Factory on Queen St |
The Flour Factory sits on Queen St, inside a building full of history. In the early 19th century it was a flour mill, and in 2014 it became a well-known gin bar in downtown Perth. Besides the bar, the space on the second floor is often used as a wedding venue and for all sorts of events, and it's also a fairly well-reviewed gastro bar. That said, we visited in March 2023, and The Flour Factory was set to close at the end of April and reopen under a new name, "ARARA and Tupí".

Once inside, the space splits into an open area on the left and a waiting area straight ahead. At first we joined the crowd queuing in the waiting area, since the seated section appeared to be full, so we waited for quite a while. When our turn came, we found out that if you just want to drink, there's no need to queue at all — you can walk straight into the open area on the left.

Once in, you just find an empty spot or stand — there's no seating requirement or minimum spend. When you want a drink, you go straight to the bar to order and pay on the spot. This turned my usual bar-going habits upside down; the music was also playing very loudly, giving it more of an American-style bar or pub feel.

The Flour Factory's main draw is its 100-plus gins from around the world. They also have their own distillery and produce their own house-brand gin. Part of the collection is displayed behind the bar's work area, and the wheel in the middle lets anyone who can't decide spin for a random gin — whichever one you land on will be served to you as a Gin and Tonic.
📜 Menu
The drinks list is centred on gin. Although the menu only lists a few Gin and Tonic pairings, you can still tell the bartender the flavour and style you're after and ask for a gin recommendation.

🍸 Gin and Tonic
Since gin is the focus here, a Gin and Tonic is a must-order. On the night, I noticed most people were ordering Gin and Tonics, downing them one after another like beer. The tonic used here is all Fever Tree, and they choose different tonics to match the characteristics of each gin.

There's another fun item here called the G&T Tree — several Gin and Tonics in a range of flavours, arranged on a tree-shaped metal stand. Besides letting you taste a variety of Gin and Tonics, it's also very photogenic. That said, it's probably better suited to a larger group, so I can only borrow a photo from the internet.

Overall it was a pretty novel experience — after all, I don't often drink at bars overseas. It's just a little different from the bar experience most people would imagine: when we asked the bartender for gin recommendations, we didn't get much information, and it felt more like a bar mass-producing Gin and Tonics 🤣. As for the gin selection, there's plenty of it, and while it can't compare with some of Taiwan's famous gin bars, there are a good number of local Australian gins, so you may well find some rare bottles here.
