Taichung Hotel | The Place Taichung | A Museum Inside a Hotel | An Art Hotel Next to the Museum of Fine Arts

The Place Taichung opened in 2018. It sits in the Calligraphy Greenway district, right next to the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and is only a 7-minute walk (about 500 meters) from Shen Ji New Village — a superb location. The hotel has a total of 170 guest rooms. When I visited Taichung earlier this year I didn't stay here, but it was already on my shortlist of places to stay.

When searching online, the most famous feature of The Place Taichung is the Starry Sky Room on the top floor. The building's exterior uses distinctive geometric shapes and large panes of clear glass to create frames at different angles, so you can gaze at the night sky right from the sofa in your room. It's a very popular room type online, though the price is correspondingly higher — this time we only booked a standard room.

📜  Information

📍 Location

The Place Taichung is on Yingcai Road, directly across from the parking lot of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, so if the hotel's own garage is full you can park in the outdoor lot opposite.

Public transport

Taiwan Railway

  • From Taichung Station (Fuxing Rd.), take bus No. 51 to Dadun Cultural Center (Yingcai Rd.), then walk 1 minute.

Intercity bus (Chaoma Station)

  • From Chaoma Transfer Station (Chaofu Rd.), take bus No. 75 to Dadun Cultural Center (Wuquan Rd.), then walk 4 minutes.

Driving

The garage entrance is on Yingcai Road, to the left as you face the hotel. It's very narrow — only one car can pass at a time and there's no room for two cars to pass each other, so take care going in and out.

The ramp isn't very wide either, so drive carefully

The ramp and parking area are both small, so spaces fill up fast. We arrived around 5 p.m. and only a few spots were left, so guests who want indoor parking should come early — otherwise the partner lots are all outdoor.

There are two basement levels, each with only about 15–20 spaces

🏢 Hotel environment

The check-in desk on the ground floor is fairly small, so you may have to wait at peak times

The ground-floor lobby isn't large, but it's full of design flair. The hotel's concept is "encountering the landscape of art and culture inside a hotel," and it regularly hosts different art exhibitions — the elevator lobby on every floor doubles as an exhibition space!

Rotating art exhibitions

Every time the elevator doors open, a new exhibition experience awaits

🛏  The room

The room is full of design touches too

The room follows a clean, all-white style with a squared-off layout full of lines and geometric shapes. Overall it's clean and bright, simple yet design-forward — a pretty good first impression when you open the door.

The twin beds and the black track lighting overhead

The TV and small table and chairs in front of the beds

Simple amenities, including drip coffee bags and tea bags

The fridge only holds two bottles of water

Bathroom

The bathroom separates wet and dry areas, with the shower and toilet in two separate rooms. What's a bit odd, though, is that there's no fixed partition between the bathroom and the bedroom area — just a fabric curtain.

The sink and counter are quite spacious

Did you notice how artsy even the hand soap labels are?

The other room is the shower

🏢 Hotel facilities

The Place Taichung doesn't have many facilities — just a basic gym

Vitality Studio (Gym)

  • Floor: 2F
  • Open 05:00–23:00

🍽 Breakfast

Breakfast is served at ZEBRA, the Italian restaurant on the ground floor. But seating is limited and the hotel has 150 rooms, so it's easy to run into a full house and a long wait. The waiting area outside is small too, which means a lot of people end up crowding the lobby at peak times...

The bright dining area

The breakfast spread is about the same as most hotels — nothing especially wow, though the flavors aren't bad. The variety is average to slightly limited.

Overall the experience was pretty good: the room is stylish, bright and comfortable, and the soundproofing wasn't bad either (or maybe our neighbors just happened to be quiet?). Staying in a space so full of artistic atmosphere is a refreshingly different experience. The next day we strolled over to Shen Ji New Village and could leave the car in the garage instead of driving out to hunt for parking. If you're planning to explore this part of town, The Place Taichung is definitely worth considering.
