Australia Independent Travel | Brisbane City Accommodation | Meriton Suites Herschel Street, Brisbane | Australian Serviced Apartment Chain | High-Floor Views Over the Brisbane Night Skyline

Brisbane was the final stop on this Australia trip, and we stayed here for four nights. As with our other stays, we wanted somewhere with easy laundry and a simple kitchen, and since we expected to do a lot of shopping in the busy areas towards the end, we also wanted a location not too far from Queen Street Mall. After weighing everything up, we picked Meriton Suites Herschel Street, Brisbane, right across from Roma Street Station.

Meriton Suites is an Australian hotel chain with properties all over the country. Brisbane alone has two: the one we stayed at on Herschel Street, and another on Adelaide Street near the Story Bridge, which is a little further from the lively part of the city.

📜  Information

📍 Location

Just as the name suggests, Meriton Suites Herschel Street, Brisbane sits on Herschel Street, only one road away from the major transport hub Roma Street Station — less than a five-minute walk. That makes it very convenient for heading to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, or for arriving from the airport.

It's also under 10 minutes on foot to Queen Street Mall and City Hall in the city centre, and there's a Woolworths supermarket just one street over, about a three-minute walk. To reach South Bank Parklands, you can take the Kurilpa Bridge in the next lane over and cross the river. The location looked great to us from the start.

🏢 Hotel Facilities

The spacious lobby and reception desk

Step through the ground-floor entrance and you're in a simple lobby with the reception desk; behind it are the lifts up to the guest floors. Because the building has so many floors, the lifts are split: rooms below level 25 use the left-hand lifts, and rooms from level 25 to 74 use the right-hand ones.

Apart from the lobby and the ground-floor pool and gym, the lifts have no floor buttons at all. You simply tap your room card and a lift is assigned automatically, taking you only to your own floor — a nice touch for security.

🛏  The Room

Once you reach your floor, the corridor is plain and simple, much like an ordinary apartment building, without much extra decoration or design. Meriton Suites Herschel Street, Brisbane has five room types in total, and each type corresponds to different floors:
  • Standard Suite: sleeps 2, floors 1–10
  • 1 Bedroom Luxury Suite: sleeps 2, floors 11–21
  • 2 Bedroom Luxury Suite: sleeps 4, floors 22–24
  • 2 Bedroom Altitude Suite: sleeps 4, floors 65–73
  • 3 Bedroom Altitude Suite: sleeps 6, floors 65–74
A spacious living room greets you at the door

We booked the 1 Bedroom Luxury Suite, but seemed to have been assigned a 2 Bedroom Luxury Suite on the 22nd floor — with one of the bedrooms locked off and unavailable. Either way, the space was very generous. Being high up, we could see Brisbane's night skyline as soon as we opened the door, although our room happened to face the station, so sadly we didn't get a direct river view.

The kitchen is very well equipped: besides a large island bench and a big fridge, there's a full gas cooktop, oven, microwave and dishwasher, plus a complete set of cutlery and glassware. Pretty much everything you'd need is there.

Capsule coffee machine

Microwave and dishware

A full set of glasses

Two dishwasher tablets are provided; ask reception for more once you've used them

Washing machine and dryer

Great natural light during the day — no need to turn on the lights

Bathroom and Toilet

The bathroom has separate wet and dry areas, and the bathroom and toilet are in two separate rooms, both reasonably spacious. One small drawback: the splash panel over the bathtub is a bit small, so it's easy to spray water outside the tub while showering.

The toiletries provided

As for noise, the soundproofing inside the bedroom is good — over four nights we never heard anything from other rooms while sleeping. However, the gap under the front door is fairly wide, so in the living room you can hear children crying in other apartments.

Also, Meriton Suites Herschel Street, Brisbane currently doesn't offer daily housekeeping, and on the days housekeeping does come, they only take out the rubbish and make the bed — they won't restock your amenities, so if you run out you'll need to ask reception.

Overall, though, the stay was comfortable in terms of both the facilities and the amount of space. Combined with the convenient location, we could get back to the room to rest quickly after a day out in Brisbane, and the well-equipped kitchen even let us cook our own dinners.
