Kansai Independent Travel | Kyoto Food | Miyako Soba & Udon | A Stand-and-Eat Shop Serving Udon and Soba | A Bowl of Hot Udon Soup First Thing in the Morning
Miyako Soba & Udon is a small restaurant specializing in udon and soba (and actually some sushi too). What makes it special is that there are no seats — customers all stand around the counter to eat. Since it sits diagonally across from our hotel, we stumbled across this little shop the night before, and were surprised to find it opens as early as 7:30 in the morning, so we decided to come by one morning for breakfast.

🍽️ The Shop and the Food
At first I thought Miyako Soba & Udon was a unique one-off shop, but later found out it's actually a chain — there are even two branches near Kyoto Kawaramachi where we stayed. The branch we visited this time is right next to Kyoto Kawaramachi Station.
The interior is tiny, with just one counter that fits about 7–8 standing customers and no seats; the kitchen work area inside the counter isn't very big either.
The menu is fairly simple, mainly various combinations of udon or soba. The menu comes directly in Chinese and English, and the prices are very cheap. Besides the freshly cooked udon and soba, the rack on the counter also sells rice balls and sushi.
| Rice balls and sushi |
Fried Tofu + Udon ¥ 440
Onsen Egg + Vegetable Tempura Fritter + Fried Tofu + Udon ¥ 670
The food comes out extremely fast — usually within a minute or two of ordering. The taste is decent; at least both of the bowls we ordered were far from bad, and having a hot bowl of udon for breakfast on a cold winter morning felt really comforting.
If you're visiting Kyoto in winter and can't decide what to have for breakfast, why not give this quick and convenient stand-and-eat udon and soba shop a try!
