Kansai Trip | Kyoto Accommodation | Hotel Forza Kyoto Shijo Kawaramachi | Right Next to the Lively Nishiki Market | Convenient and Affordable

This was our first independent trip to Kyoto, and when picking a hotel our main criteria were "convenient transport" and "not too old a building." After searching the booking sites for a while, we settled on Hotel Forza Kyoto Shijo Kawaramachi. Besides being located right by Shijo Kawaramachi Station, you can walk straight into the hotel from the underground shopping street — a really nice plus when the weather is freezing, since you don't have to go outside into the wind.

📜  Information

📍 Location

Hotel Forza Kyoto Shijo Kawaramachi sits right near the bustling Shijo Kawaramachi Station, surrounded by department stores, restaurants and drugstores. It's only a 2–3 minute walk to the Shijo Kawaramachi subway station, and the lively Nishiki Market is just across the street, about 2 minutes on foot. Even Hanamikoji Street and Yasaka Shrine are within 15 minutes' walk — the location is extremely convenient.

🏢 Hotel Environment

The Forza's lobby is on B1, so after entering from the street-level entrance on the first floor you have to take the elevator or escalator down one floor. From the underground street entrance, however, you can walk straight into the reception lobby.

One thing to note: the elevator and escalator are only available if you enter through the main entrance. If you come in from the underground street entrance there are several steps (two flights, about 20 steps), which makes hauling large luggage more of a hassle.

The B1 lobby leads to Exit 11 of the underground street

The exit from the B1 lobby to the underground street has stairs only (and there's another flight outside going down to the underground street)

Reception Lobby

Besides the staffed front desk, the lobby also has several automated check-in / check-out kiosks where you can complete check-in without any staff assistance. The machines support multiple languages, so they're not difficult to use.

Self check-in with direct credit card payment

The lobby has a lounge area with plenty of seating

Free Sake

Every guest staying at Forza can pick up one token at the front desk per night and use this machine to redeem a free cup of sake. That said, the sake here is a pretty basic, inexpensive one — the flavor was just so-so to me.

🛏  The Room

The room is on the dim side with warm-toned lighting, and cleanliness was quite good. It isn't large, but there's a bench by the window with space underneath for two large suitcases opened flat, so they don't block the walkway.

Simple amenities and bottled water from Yufuin

Besides the usual amenities, the room also has a Panasonic NanoCare facial steamer, said to give your skin better moisturizing.

The bathroom is average in size, with a washlet toilet and a single-size bathtub.

🏢 Hotel Facilities

The hotel is really more of a business hotel, so there aren't many facilities — just vending machines and washing machines.

Breakfast Area

We didn't add breakfast when booking. We asked on site and it was 2,000 yen per person for a buffet-style breakfast, which you can just buy on the day if you feel like it.

A coffee machine in the lobby, available anytime

Overall the stay was pretty good, and the location is genuinely convenient — whether heading to Arashiyama or straight to Osaka, no transfers are needed. The neighborhood is lively at night too, with restaurants and bars all within walking distance.

Check-in and check-out are now both done via self-service machines, but they offer multiple language options, and if you need help the staff speak good English, so communication is no problem.
