Lake Toya Dining | SoupCurry HLAHAL | Hokkaido Food | Soup Curry Specialty Restaurant | Stunning Lake and Mountain Views
| Gazing at the lake and mountain scenery |
When looking for a restaurant around Lake Toya, aside from the various hot spring hotels, there are actually quite a few different small eateries to choose from near the Lake Toya hot spring district. For this stay at a Lake Toya hotel, I found a soup curry restaurant near the hotel that looked quite new and modern. Although there wasn't much information online, it had a pretty good rating on Google Maps.

📍 Location and Interior
SoupCurry HLAHAL is located between two of Lake Toya's famous hot spring hotels, "Manseikaku" and "Nonokaze". It's just a few minutes' walk from Toya Station or the hot spring street, and there is a parking lot next to the restaurant, making it very convenient for those traveling by car as well.

HLAHAL stands for "Happy restaurant loved in the area with lake." The interior has a simple, rustic style, featuring mainly wooden furniture and white tones. In addition to regular seating, there is also a bar area, with about 30 seats in total. The space is spacious and uncrowded, with excellent natural lighting.
The biggest highlight of the restaurant is the lake-view window. Although the parking lot lies in between, you can still take in the full scenery of Lake Toya and gaze out at Mount Yotei (Ezo Fuji) in the distance, giving you the cozy feeling of being in a lakeside café.

What is soup curry?
Soup curry, or "soupy curry," originated in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Unlike thick, gooey Japanese curry, its broth is light and refreshing, served in a soup-bowl style. The base broth is usually made from chicken bone stock or vegetable stock, with curry powder, spices, Chinese medicinal herbs, ginger, garlic, and tomato paste added, and then depending on the restaurant's style, coconut milk or other signature ingredients are added.
SoupCurry HLAHAL's Soup Curry
SoupCurry HLAHAL mainly serves soup curry, using locally grown Hokkaido vegetables paired with different main ingredients, such as seafood, pork, beef, or vegetables. You can choose the spiciness level of the curry and the amount of rice, and it comes served with turmeric rice.

Overall, the dining environment at SoupCurry HLAHAL is really excellent. The interior is clean and comfortable, and just outside the large floor-to-ceiling windows is the beautiful scenery of Lake Toya. Enjoying the lake and mountain views while dining is especially delightful. As for the food, the soup curry has a rich, fragrant broth that is aromatic yet not greasy, paired with deep-fried vegetables for a layered and varied texture that tastes both refreshing and satisfying. As for the meat, I personally found it a bit ordinary and a little disappointing, as it was slightly tough. But overall it was still quite good and didn't detract from the overall dining experience.
If you come to Lake Toya and want a comfortable place to dine while enjoying the lake view, this restaurant is well worth adding to your itinerary—especially recommended for those who love soup curry!
