Tainan Accommodation | U.I.J Hotel & Hostel | A Hybrid of Design Hotel and Youth Hostel | Retro and Hipster Vibes

Tainan is a city where history and innovation come together. This time we chose to stay at "U.I.J Hotel & Hostel" in the city center, a hybrid property that blends a design hotel with a youth hostel. It not only offers comfortable places to stay, but also creates a strong artsy, hipster atmosphere.

📜  Information

  • Room type: U Room
  • Address: No. 5, Lane 115, Youai Street, West Central District, Tainan City
  • Phone: 06-221-8188
  • Official website: https://uij.com.tw/

📍 Location

U.I.J Hotel & Hostel sits at No. 5, Lane 115, Youai Street, West Central District, Tainan — a great location, right next to Tainan Art Museum Building 2. There are many famous attractions nearby, all within walking distance, whether you're after culture such as Chihkan Tower, the Confucius Temple and Shennong Street, or a food tour — Yongle Market, Guohua Street and Hai'an Road are all close by, too.

Driving yourself

The parking entrance is right beside the hotel's main door. Although there's quite a bit of open space outside the hotel, plus a small park, it sits inside a lane, and the access roads are all narrow — you have to come in via "Lane 115, Youai Street" or "Lane 35, Section 2, Yongfu Road."

Bus transfer from Tainan Railway Station

From the Tainan bus station, take the Red Trunk Line buses: No. 1 / 5 / 10 / 11 / 18 / 19

  • Get off at Ximen Youai Street Intersection stop → walk along Ximen Road → turn left onto Youai Street → turn right into Lane 115, Youai Street (next to Youai Market) → U.I.J is on your left

HSR shuttle bus

HSR Exit 2 → HSR shuttle bus H31 City Hall Line → get off at Jianxing Junior High School (Confucius Temple) stop → walk along Fuqian Road → turn right onto Yongfu Road → turn left onto Youai Street → turn left into Lane 115, Youai Street (next to Youai Market) → U.I.J is on your left (about an 8–9 minute walk from the Jianxing Junior High School stop)

🏢 Hotel Environment and Facilities

The reception desk in the ground-floor lobby

Walking into the hotel's ground-floor lobby feels like stepping back into the Age of Exploration. The whole space is designed around the concept of a "ship fortress," using plenty of industrial materials such as rivets, black iron and lead panels to create a solid, grounded presence. The high ceilings, retro light fixtures and wooden floors weave nostalgic and modern elements together beautifully.

On the walls you'll find a vinyl record display and cabinets of vintage objects — full of nostalgia, and a sign of the hotel's insistence on detail and taste. The sofa area is spacious and comfortable, an ideal corner for travelers to rest, read or get a little work done, while large glass windows let in natural light, making the whole atmosphere warm, quiet and design-conscious.

Because U.I.J is a hybrid of design hotel and youth hostel, it has plenty of shared spaces. Besides the lounge on the ground floor, the third floor has a large shared area, an open shared kitchen, and an outdoor terrace for relaxing.

The shared space, "Hello Salon"

Up on the third floor, accessible only to hotel guests, there's a very large shared space with excellent natural light. Since many guests stay in the hostel-style rooms, quite a few people use this area to work on their laptops, scroll on their phones, or simply relax.

Open Kitchen

Inside the shared space there's also an open kitchen, equipped with an oven, refrigerator, basic tableware and seasonings — perfect for simple cooking or reheating takeout. Coffee beans and pour-over equipment are provided too, so guests can brew themselves a cup of coffee.

The outdoor "Free Terrace"

The outdoor area is comfortable and spacious. When the weather is nice it's a great spot to gather with friends for a drink, or just to quietly enjoy a moment of calm in the middle of the city.

At night the lights come on for even more atmosphere

🛏  The Room

This time we stayed in a room on the 8th floor. The room is quite spacious, with a queen-size bed and plenty of natural light. The design continues the hotel's overall style: the headboard wall is entirely retro red brick, paired with vintage-style furniture and warm yellow lighting for a relaxed, comfortable feel. Some room types even come with a vinyl record player, and you can borrow records from the front desk to play.

That said, overall the soundproofing isn't great — we checked in fairly early that day and could clearly hear housekeeping cleaning the room next door.

Mineral water and sparkling water are provided in the room; ask the front desk for refills

The hotel uses glass-bottled Weikuang mineral water and sparkling water. There's one bottle of still water in the room and two bottles of sparkling water in the fridge — if you finish them, just ask the front desk for more.

You can see Tainan Art Museum Building 2 right out the window

The bathroom is separated from the bedroom and features a wet/dry separation design. The style matches the room, with retro red brick and frosted glass.

Spacious, with a TOTO washlet toilet

The shower and toilet areas are roomy, and the bath amenities are all Aesop. There's a display counter on the ground floor as well, so if you like the products you can buy them directly at the Aesop counter in the lobby.

🍽️ Breakfast

Breakfast is served in the ground-floor restaurant, a high-ceilinged, spacious room. It's a set meal, one per person, redeemed with the breakfast voucher you receive at check-in. The portions are just right and the food tastes great.

🍪 Handmade Pong-piah

During your stay you can also sign up for hands-on workshops. We signed up for the handmade pong-piah (puffed pastry) class (NT$100 per person), held in the shared space on the third floor, where a staff member introduces the pastry and teaches you how to make it.

"Pong-piah" is a traditional pastry unique to Tainan, also known as "confinement cake," with origins traceable to the early 19th century. It was originally made to nourish women after childbirth, and over time it has become one of the most representative old-school local snacks of Tainan's old city.

Overall, our stay at U.I.J Hotel & Hostel was a good one. What left the deepest impression were the shared spaces — the reading area, the shared kitchen, and the terrace are all full of design sense and a lived-in warmth that really lets you slow down. The overall style leans retro-industrial with a strong artsy touch, and travelers who care about design and lifestyle should love it here.

If I had to pick a small flaw, it would be the merely average soundproofing. That said, we happened to stay on a weekday when the floor wasn't crowded, so apart from the cleaning noise at the start, nothing else disturbed us.

If you're planning a few days in Tainan and want a stay with great atmosphere where you can truly unwind, U.I.J Hotel & Hostel is well worth considering.
