Kansai Independent Travel | Osaka Accommodation | Osaka Excel Hotel Tokyu | Near Hommachi and Shinsaibashi Stations | Brand-New Hotel with Spacious Rooms

We stayed at the end of the year and caught the annual illumination on the street in front of the hotel

The Osaka Excel Hotel Tokyu is a new hotel that opened at the end of 2019, just before the pandemic, so it's still relatively new. After actually staying here, we found that the property has been well maintained and everything still feels quite fresh.

The main reason we chose this hotel is that, while searching for accommodation in Osaka, we found that among the several hotels in a similar price range, this one had the largest rooms — and by a considerable margin — so in the end we decided to stay here.

📜  Information

📍 Location

The hotel building is visible as soon as you exit Hommachi Station

Osaka Excel Hotel Tokyu is very close to Hommachi subway station — only about a 2-minute walk from the station exit to the hotel entrance. Hommachi is also a very convenient station: it's just one stop from the shopping hotspot Shinsaibashi and two stops from the transport hub Osaka Namba, and you can reach Osaka Station without changing trains.

On the ground floor of the building there is a Starbucks and a dessert shop (FRUiT hanafru), and nearby there's a FamilyMart and a 7-Eleven. Behind the hotel is Namba Betsuin (Minami Mido) temple. What's particularly distinctive is that the building was designed in the shape of an archway, so you can see Namba Betsuin straight through from the front.

🏢 The Hotel

The lobby of Osaka Excel Hotel Tokyu is on the 16th floor. Apart from floors 2 to 4, which house restaurants open to the public, everything below the 16th floor is guest rooms, while the 17th floor holds the breakfast restaurant and meeting rooms.

To check in you have to use the side entrance and take the elevator directly up to the lobby on the 16th floor, and then transfer to another elevator on the 16th floor to get to your room — which is slightly inconvenient.

The Lobby

The moment the elevator reaches the 16th floor, you're greeted by a bright row of floor-to-ceiling windows and a spacious lobby. The entire 16th floor is lobby space — besides the reception desk and lounge area, the lobby bar is here too.

The open area also has large panoramic windows

The lobby area isn't just spacious — the natural light is excellent too. During the day you can comfortably take in the street views from here, and at night it's a great spot for the city lights!

Lobby Bar MIDO

On one side of the lobby is the lobby bar MIDO. The bar isn't large and has only a few seats — it's an open space that blends right into the lobby. Enjoying a drink here while taking in the night view of the city would be a pretty comfortable experience. This time in Osaka we went out to a bar (Osaka bar: CRAFTROOM), and by the time we got back the lobby bar was already closing, so we never got the chance for a drink here.

🛏  The Room

Compared with typical Japanese hotels, the rooms at Osaka Excel Hotel Tokyu really are noticeably larger — there's enough floor space to lay two or three large suitcases completely flat. It doesn't feel cramped the way many Japanese hotels do; the room size is very good.

The washbasin is outside, and the toilet and bathroom are in two separate rooms for a proper wet/dry separation. The basic amenities are all there — they even provide six cups — and besides the electric kettle there's an ice bucket, handy for grabbing some ice if you fancy a nightcap in the room.

The washbasin design isn't great though: the faucet is a bit far from the basin, so every time you turn the water on or off you inevitably splash the counter, and it just gets wetter and wetter.

The amenities include a packet of bath salts

The TV is a good size, with a desk in front of it

Good natural light, with street views out the window

The bathroom and toilet are separate, but the downside of the bathroom is that there's no rack inside at all for hanging towels or placing clothes — you have to open the door and put them on the hanger outside. That design is really inconvenient, especially in cold weather.

🏢 Hotel Facilities

The hotel's facilities are pretty simple: apart from the lobby bar, there's only a gym and the breakfast restaurant.

The gym is extremely basic

Breakfast Restaurant

The breakfast restaurant is on the top floor, the 17th. You can take the stairs up from the lobby, or use the internal elevator to reach the 17th floor. The dining area likewise has large floor-to-ceiling windows — besides the great light and views, the space overall is roomy and comfortable.

As for the breakfast spread, there's plenty of variety and quantity. Besides the Western breakfast items you usually find at hotels, there are lots of Japanese dishes such as kushikatsu, takoyaki and tamagoyaki, plus many kinds of pickles, and udon and miso soup are available too. It's a generous spread and tastes good, and paired with the comfortable setting it made for a great experience.

Stylishly designed pendant lamps by the bed

Overall this was a pretty good stay. Aside from the less-than-ideal bathroom and washbasin design, check-in at the front desk was smooth, the room was comfortable, the breakfast was good, and the location is convenient — all in all a solid experience, and one of the places I'd recommend if you're staying in Osaka.
