Northern Kyushu Independent Travel | Yufuin Food | Yakiniku Manyoken | A Cozy Family Restaurant | Great-Value Kuroge Wagyu Yakiniku | Menu
We stayed one night in Yufuin, and since we hadn't booked dinner at our guesthouse, we had to go find something good to eat. Before the trip I'd already looked it up and found a yakiniku restaurant recommended by quite a few people, offering great-value wagyu, so we decided to have dinner there during our night in Yufuin — Yakiniku Manyoken.

🍽 Atmosphere & Location
Yakiniku Manyoken sits on the road that runs straight out from Yufuin Station — under 10 minutes on foot. That evening we borrowed bicycles from our guesthouse and rode straight down this road to the restaurant.
After 6 p.m., once most of the tourists have left, Yufuin is actually very quiet; apart from a few restaurants, the ordinary shops are all closed.
Yakiniku Manyoken is on a corner, and it has a big sign so you won't miss it.
Open the door and you'll find a rather curious style — something like Native American (?) totem poles. You have to go up the stairs to the second floor to reach the restaurant.
The dining room isn't big — only about 5 or 6 tables — and the interior has a retro, nostalgic feel. It looks like the place is run by one family.
🍽 The Food
Menu
The menu is split into a few options: all-you-can-eat, set meals, and à la carte. If you specifically ask the owner, he'll bring you a "handwritten" Chinese menu. The all-you-can-eat option isn't expensive, but it doesn't include wagyu. On the Chinese menu, only the "beef loin" and "premium short rib" are Kuroge Wagyu — that's only marked on the Japanese menu. So in the end we decided to order à la carte and just eat what we wanted.

Jidori Free-Range Chicken (¥ 800)
The yakiniku is grilled on this kind of grill, and for oil they give you a chunk of beef fat to brush over it (the piece on the right).Kuroge Wagyu Premium Short Rib (¥ 1,300)
Kuroge Wagyu Beef Loin (¥ 1,500)
This piece was actually fairly large, with nicely even marbling — it looked pretty good. There are also scissors beside the table for cutting it.
Draft Beer (¥ 600)
We went on to order a few other dishes, and in the end the meal came to ¥ 5,830 for two people.
The wagyu may not be top grade, but at this price the value is really quite good.

It's a warm little restaurant with reasonable prices; the only pity is that smoking is allowed. Just as we were finishing, customers who came in later lit up right there. The indoor ventilation isn't great, so the place is already full of grill smoke — adding cigarette smoke on top was honestly a bit awful. That's the one thing I personally couldn't accept, though in terms of value for money the food is really quite good.
